Big PNG presence at Bp. Tony’s funeral in Sydney
By Bp. Otto Separi - Aitape
02 NOV 2013. … Most of the former PNG Missionaries especially from Aitape were present. Interestingly, some of the indigenous PNG people living here in Sydney especially from Wewak and the Central Province were also present. After the Funeral Mass, the PNG people living here in Sydney went with the body to Macquarie Cemetery and we sang the PNG liturgical songs before the laying of the body in the Cemetery. It was a very emotionally moving experience. Some of them could not hold their tears. I placed a little PNG flag between the flowers that were placed beside Bp. Tony’s coffin and it really identified Bp. Tony as from PNG where he spent more than half of his life time.
Those of us who flew in from PNG for the Funeral Mass and the burial are Arch bishop Douglas Young, (Highlands) Bishop Rochus Tatamai(Southern), Fr. Peter Artiken (Wewak), Mr. Zoilo (CBC Finance Manager) and myself (Momase).
The Apostolic Nuncio of Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands was also present at the funeral Mass and he read the condolence messages from Pope Francis and the Prefect of the Evangelization of Peoples just before the beginning of the Mass. (www.cbcpngsi.org – firstname.lastname@example.org )
