Dr. Catherine Nongkas tells General Assembly of a New Evangelization of the heart

06 NOV 2013/2. Dr. Catherine Nongkas of Divine Word University, Madang delivered her key note address this morning on "Year of Faith, New Evangelization” to the Second General Assembly of the Catholic Church in Papua New Guinea and Solomon Islands. She immediately pointed at the widespread and deepening trend of secularization. “Faith and Christian way of living are no longer broadly accepted in many quarters – she said”. The number of practicing faithful seems to be dwindling. At the same time faith needs to challenge the culture, both traditional and modern. Christianity calls for life in a community and this provides an alternative to rampant individualism. Traditional sorcery believes, urban poverty and the breakdown of the family become the environment of the witnessing of faith. Connecting to the theme of the General Assembly drawing from the meeting of Jesus with the Samaritan woman, Dr. Nongkas explained how Jesus was able to provide his counterpart a meeting opportunity, to listen and to bring about an inner change from hostility to hospitality. The New Evangelization also consists in a warming up of the hearts with the word and the power of Christ, which in turn empowers and renews the hearts of individuals and communities. It’s matter of spiritual life and formation rather than structures and activities. (Follow the General Assembly on Twitter at @CatholicReporterPNG ) www.cbcpngsi.org – giorgiolicini@yahoo.com
